Here are some more details on the rules.

Restrictions and Guidelines

No slamming from guard in any kids or teens divisions or any novice or beginner divisions, or any divisions that do not divide beginner from advanced players (slamming from guard means picking up your opponent off his back and slamming him back to the ground, if a player jumps guard his opponent may throw him to the ground). Throwing is not considered slamming.

Slamming is allowed in all Adult Intermediate, Advanced and Professional divisions, but there is no slamming on the head or neck, and slamming should be used to escape holds or advance position not to injury your opponent. Players appearing to try to injury their opponent will be warned or disqualified.

No twisting leg locks (examples: heel hooks, toe holds etc.) in any kids or teens divisions or any novice or beginner divisions, or any divisions that do not divide beginner form advanced players.

Twisting legs locks are allowed in all Adult Intermediate, Advanced or Professional divisions.

No knee bars in the kid’s under-12 division, all other divisions is okay.

SUBMISSION: All holds must be applied as to induce submission, not to break the joint, or otherwise cause lasting injury.

No small joint manipulation (meaning finger and toe locks etc.). No grabbing individual fingers, all four fingers must be grabbed to peal. Pealing the thumb is okay, but not twisting it or grabbing and holding it.

NO Grabbing or ripping flesh including ears, nose, lips, eyes, pinching etc. Placing fingers in the throat, groin, eyes, nose etc. is forbidden.

Clothing may be grabbed for the purpose of off balancing, submitting, holding, or otherwise placing an opponent at a disadvantage, but must be done in a way as not to rip or remove the clothing from an opponent. This will be stricter in the women’s division.

No throwing an opponent on the head, neck or face. Every effort must be made to plant the opponent on his side, back, front or legs.

NO STRIKING of any kind

NO JEWLRY may be worn.

NO STALLING: A player who appears to be deliberately moving out of bounds to avoid submission, take down or any other disadvantage may be warned or even disqualified.

OUT OF BOUNDS: If the players accidentally go out of bounds or move to close to another player, the referee will return them to the center of the mat in a position as close as possible to their exiting position. If their exiting position was ambiguous, they will be returned to standing.

ATTEMPTING TO INJURE: A player who appears, in the opinion of the referee, to be attempting to injure his opponent will be warned or disqualified, according to the severity of the infraction. Un-sportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated.

Sportsmanship: This is a friendly competition; each contestant is expected to treat all other contestants in a respectful manner. Un-sportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated; warnings and disqualifications will be given at the referee's discretion and will not be argued. No technique with the intent to cause lasting injury will be tolerated.

What to Wear

Recommended: rash guard and fight shorts

A Gi (Kimono) or a t-shirt (if it is not too loose) with any pants or shorts (assuming that they are athletic in nature) are okay.

All clothing must be strong enough to endure regular grabbing; clothing with holes, cuts, or tears will not be permitted.

No bare torsos or tank tops

NO sports bras, Speedos or anything similar.

No shoes

Finger and toenails must be trimmed.

Apparel cannot have zippers, straps, buckles, or anything else that may cause injury. No jewelry of any type may be worn.

Personal cleanliness is mandatory.

Rules Updated: 8/24/08

Scoring: No-Time-Limit Matches

NO POINTS OR TIME-LIMITS the match will end when one person submits or is disqualified

If there are too many competitors we will use this Pro-Style scoring system.

Scoring: Pro-Style Timed Matches
Points

TAKE DOWN 1 Point

MOUNT (3 seconds) 1 Point

BACK w/hooks (3 seconds) 1 point

CATCH* (near submission) 3 points

*A catch is a near successful submission attempt that meets the following criteria.

IN DANGER: the opponent is in ‘danger’ meaning the finish in question has the potential for completion (i.e. hips are in place or the neck has been reached, etc.)

LIKELY TO FINISH: the finish is not a low percentage submission (wrist lock, body scissor, etc.)

TIME TO ESCAPE: the opponent takes time to escape

Advantages

NEAR THROW: clearly breaking the balance of an opponent

SIDE CONTROL

BACK CONTROL w/o hooks

GUARD PASS

SWEEP

REVERSAL

NEAR CATCH: any submission attempt that does not fulfill all criteria

STALLING: if an opponent is warned for stalling

Win the match by…

Submission = Win, or Disqualification = Lose

Points: if there is no submission the player with the greater points wins the game

Advantages: if all else is tied the player with the greater number of advantages wins

MATCH LENGTH: 5 minutes (kids 3 minutes)

At the end of the time limit the referee will not stop the match until all point scoring action has subsided. This means the clock will not save you from a submission, throw or other point scoring action.

SUDEN DEATH: If points are tied (not including advantages) the referee will allow the match to continue into a sudden death round. The round will continue until either player scores a point or submission, up to 3 minutes (2 minutes for kids). If no points are scored after time expires the player with more advantages wins the match. If at this time both points and advantages are tied the referee will allow the match to continue into a second sudden death round, this will end when either player scores a point, advantage or submission.

Divisions

All divisions will be combined, cancelled or changed as necessary.

If you have placed first in a division you must compete in a higher division (if available).

No slamming or twisting leg locks in these divisions

Kids: All skill levels age 7-12 (No knee bars in this division)

Teen Boys: All skill levels age 13-17

Adult Women: All skill levels age 13+

Masters: All skill levels age 30+

Novice Men: Grapplers < 6 months

Beginner Men: Grapplers < 2 years

All submissions and slamming allowed in these divisions

Intermediate Men: Grapplers 2-5 years

Advanced Men: Grapplers 5+ years

Weight Classes

All weight divisions will be based on closest weight, there are no pre-set weight cut-offs. When possible, players will be placed in groups of eight keeping players weights as close together as possible. (EXAMPLE: the lightest eight players may be in a weight class then the next eight lightest in a group, etc.). Weight divisions may have fewer players if necessary to keep weight classes close enough together.

These will be no-time-limit matches. we will only use the Pro-Style scoring rules if we have too many people show up. And though we have had great response I think we should be fine with no time limits.

We hope most coaches and experienced grapplers will be willing to referee at least some matches. Being a referee is easy when there are no points. We plan on having up to 8 matches going (at least 4 on the mat, 1 in the cage, 1 in the ring, and we will have another mat area with 2 matches in the yoga room, if needed).
